KICTANet is inviting applications from grassroots Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) based in Kenya to take part in a Policy Hackathon on Promoting Safe and Inclusive Digital Spaces in Kenya. This Policy Hackathon, is part of our KenSafeSpace Project, which aims to strengthen the voice, capacity and influence of Kenyan human rights organisations to promote and safeguard democratic, safe, and inclusive digital space. 

This policy hackathon a first in a two-part series, will bring together policy advocates, digital rights defenders, and innovators to co-create impactful policy solutions based on the following thematic areas:

  1. Safeguarding Digital Identity and Data Protection
  2. Combating Online Harassment and Promoting Digital Safety
  3. Enhancing Content Moderation and Platform Accountability

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be a representative or a group of Kenyan CSOs 
  • Must have experience or interest in digital rights, online safety, data protection, or content moderation.
  • Their policy hackathon idea is feasible and impactful to the Kenyan society
  • Must be available to fully participate in all hackathon sessions.
  • Must be willing to collaborate in a diverse, multi-disciplinary team.
  • Geographical diversity, gender balance and inclusion of minority groups will be considered in selection.
The first phase will be conducted between May and July, while the second phase will be between August and October. 
The top 3 teams will get a seed grant as follows:
  1. Winner – EUR 4,000 
  2. 1st Runner-up – EUR 3,000
  3. 2nd Runner-up – EUR 2,000
